With his small portable work table, sculptor François Pompon (1855–1933) liked to stroll through the Jardin des Plantes in Paris (a public park and botanical garden). There he could observe animals and make small-scale models of them. Back in his studio, he carved bears, panthers, but also dogs, chickens and rabbits, finding the essence of each animal by simplifying its shapes. Before the eyes of visitors to the Musée d’Orsay, where many of these sculptures are kept, the animals come to life! His sculptures were reinterpreted by artist Gérard Lo Monaco who, in collaboration with the RMN (an association of 34 museums) and the Musée d’Orsay, pays tribute to Pompon with this beautiful series of wooden toys.
